Cloud services
The EU invests 1.2 billion euros in cloud computing. Three companies from Poland are involved in the project.
The European Commission has approved financial support of 1.2 billion euros for the Joint European Strategic Interest Project (IPCEI). Its aim is to finance research on the development of advanced cloud processing technologies and their implementation in the industrial sector.
Seven European Union countries, including France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, and Spain, have approved the IPCEI Next Generation Cloud Infrastructure and Services (IPCEI CIS) project. The project envisages public funding of up to 1.2 billion euros and opens the door for an additional 1.4 billion euros from the private sector. As part of the initiative, 19 companies have committed to collaborating on nineteen innovative cloud computing solutions.
Three Polish companies - Octawave, Atente Industries and CloudFerro are also participating in the project. The latter will implement the "Gateway" project. It focuses on advanced technological research and aims to develop and implement next-generation cloud services. The company Oktawave will be involved in a cryptographic project, focusing on the security of data and applications stored in the clouds. Meanwhile, Atende Industries will work on the "TStorage" project, which is a NoSQL database and allows for efficient collection and processing of time series data, e.g. related to electricity consumption.
As part of the IPCEI project in the field of cloud technology, 19 companies are participating, including the French Atos and Orange and the German Deutsche Telekom, SAP, Telecom Italia and Telefonica Espana. In the field of cloud computing, the three largest companies are Amazon, Microsoft and Google.
EU IPCEI projects
As Reuters reports, EU IPCEI projects are a key element of the European Union's digital and industrial policy. They aim to integrate research, finance, and business to stimulate economic growth, increase competitiveness, and support the process of ecological and digital transformation.
– This project initially envisages the creation of about a thousand jobs, both direct and indirect, for professionals dealing with data analysis and artificial intelligence. In the longer term, this number is expected to increase to 5,000 jobs – emphasized in an interview with Reuters Didier Reynders, EU Commissioner for Competition.
Reynders added that the conducted assessment showed the innovative nature of the projects, which guarantees the effective use of public funds for the development of an innovative and efficient economy.
The implementation of the IPCEI CIS project is planned for the years 2023–2031, and the work schedule will depend on specific projects and companies involved. The first results, in the form of open source reference infrastructure, can be expected by the end of 2027.
