What is Apple doing about AI? Tim Cook is to announce the company's plans this year.
Apple will announce its plans for the development of generative AI in the coming months, the company's CEO Tim Cook conveyed at a shareholder meeting at the end of February.
How is Apple developing artificial intelligence?
Although Apple has so far developed its generative AI technologies more cautiously than competitors such as Microsoft or Google, Tim Cook during the shareholders' meeting on February 28, 2024, emphasized that AI already plays a key role in the company's products with the logo of a bitten apple. In his opinion, this technology has an "amazing potential" and can revolutionize the way users deal with productivity and problem solving.
Detailed plans of Apple regarding the development of generative artificial intelligence are to be revealed only in the coming months. The company's shareholders rejected a proposal calling on the company to disclose more information about how it uses AI in its operations, and its approach to ethical issues related to this technology.
Tim Cook, however, pointed out that currently "behind-the-scenes work" is underway in this area, and according to Bloomberg magazine, Apple intends to use AI, among other things, to improve data search functions on its devices. Cook also emphasized that Mac computers equipped with Apple Silicon processors are already the best machines for AI tasks on the market.
– Every Mac powered by Apple Silicon is an incredibly capable AI machine. In fact, there is no better computer for AI on the market today – said Cook.
The proposal to disclose more information about the use of AI in Apple was presented at the shareholders' meeting by AFL-CIO, the pension fund of the largest federation of trade unions in the USA.
– Compared to other leading technology companies, Apple lags behind in disclosing information about the ethical use of AI. We hope that Apple will improve its practices in this area – said Brandon Rees, Deputy Director for Corporations and Capital Markets at AFL-CIO in a statement.
AFL-CIO hopes that Apple will start talking more openly about how it uses artificial intelligence. However, Apple opposes this initiative, arguing that such information could adversely affect its competitive position in the rapidly changing AI industry.
