Volkswagen has partnered with Cerence to integrate its proprietary voice assistant IDA with ChatGPT. The first cars equipped with the AI chatbot were presented at the CES 2024 trade show.

Artificial intelligence is entering the automotive industry. During the CES 2024 in Las Vegas, Volkswagen announced extensive plans to integrate ChatGPT with its proprietary voice assistant IDA in new models of its cars. The first cars of the German brand, which will be equipped with ChatGPT, are the electric ID 7, ID 4, ID 5 and ID 3 as well as popular models with a combustion engine - Tiguan, Passat and Golf.

In the new versions of Volkswagen vehicles, ChatGPT will be integrated with the latest generation of the infotainment system, which will significantly expand the capabilities of the IDA voice assistant. According to the brand's announcement, the use of the new system is to remain simple and intuitive - to activate it, just say "Hello IDA" or press a button on the steering wheel.
In this way, users will be able to, among other things, control entertainment, navigation and air conditioning functions, but also obtain more detailed information. For example, queries like "Where is a good Chinese restaurant nearby?" or "Where can I buy a phone charger?" will now be processed by the cloud-based Chat Pro Cerence. Meanwhile, more difficult issues that go beyond the current capabilities of IDA will be anonymously redirected to artificial intelligence.
The brand also assures that ChatGPT will not gain access to vehicle information, and all questions and answers will be immediately deleted, ensuring a high level of data protection.

The new ChatGPT functionality will be introduced to selected Volkswagen models via a radio broadcast update. VW and Cerence plan further development of ChatGPT capabilities in cars and are working on the next generation of the VW voice assistant, which will be even more deeply integrated with language models and AI.
