Summary

  • Black Friday and Cyber Monday are significant shopping periods, with new regulations from the Omnibus EU directive making it easier to detect unethical pricing practices by requiring stores to display the lowest price of a product from the last thirty days.
  • According to a Strategy & Polska report, nearly two-thirds of Poles will participate in Black Friday and Cyber Monday, with average spending expected to be around a thousand PLN.
  • A study titled "Poles and the Sharing Economy" found that over a quarter of respondents prefer new products, despite their current ones being in good condition. The study also found that 24% of people are aware of the negative impact of excessive consumerism on finances and the environment, a 2% increase from three years ago.
  • Krzysztof Badowski, managing partner of Strategy & Polska, suggests that the pre-holiday period is crucial for retailers and that this year's Black Friday and subsequent promotional activities will provide insight into the state of Polish retail trade.
  • Consumer behavior has changed in recent months, with people buying less and often more frugally, opting for substitutes for their favorite brands. Despite this, Poles still enjoy promotions and plan purchases, often waiting for Black Friday.
  • Data from the BIG InfoMonitor Debtors Register shows that 2.7 million Poles have financial arrears, including bills not settled on time or credit installments delayed by at least 30 days.

The Black Friday falling on Friday, November 24, and Cyber Monday on Monday, November 27, are for many people some of the most anticipated shopping periods of the year - reminds BIG InfoMonitor. Thanks to the Omnibus EU directive, for the first time, unethical practices of presenting prices by sellers are supposed to be easier to detect. It's about regulations in force from January 2023, which, in addition to the current price, require stores to present the lowest price of a given product from the last thirty days.

"According to the latest Strategy & Polska report, nearly 2/3 of Poles will benefit from this year's Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The expected expenditures on these days are to average about a thousand PLN" - BIG InfoMonitor reported.

At the same time, from the study "Poles and the sharing economy" recently conducted for BIG InfoMonitor, it turns out that more than a quarter of respondents prefer the latest products, even though the ones they currently own are still good. Consumers are increasingly aware that excessive consumerism has a negative impact not only on finances but also on the environment. Currently, 24% of people think so, 2 percentage points more than three years earlier

- The pre-holiday period is a key sales time for many retailers, so this year's Black Friday and the surrounding weeks of strong promotional activities will say a lot about the condition of Polish retail trade - argues Krzysztof Badowski, managing partner of Strategy & Polska.

- The last difficult months have brought further changes in consumer behavior: we buy less, often more frugally, choosing substitutes for favorite brands. Traditionally, Poles like to take advantage of promotions and plan purchases, for this reason they wait for Black Friday, but they will also critically assess the attractiveness of offers. The first readings indicate that we can expect increases compared to last year, which was also difficult - adds Badowski.

According to data from the BIG InfoMonitor Debtors Register, 2.7 million Poles have financial arrears, i.e. bills not settled on time reported to the register or credit installments delayed by at least 30 days.
