Summary

  • New AI tools in Google Maps will allow users to search for locations using colloquial language, eliminating the need for specific keywords.
  • Google Maps will now offer photos and reviews of places in addition to traditional search results like addresses and opening hours.
  • The improvements aim to inspire the discovery of new locations that match the interests or needs of users. For instance, the app can suggest indoor activities on a rainy day.
  • Large language models (LLM) enable the app to analyze databases containing information about over 250 million places and observations from a community of over 300 million active users.
  • The project is launching in the US as an experimental beta access for a selected group of local guides. Their feedback will be used to improve the feature before it is made available to everyone.
  • This development represents a step forward in integrating AI with everyday tools, potentially revolutionizing the way we use navigation and travel planning apps.

New AI tools in Google Maps will allow for more natural location search, eliminating the need for using specific keywords. Instead, users will be able to formulate queries in colloquial language, and the application, thanks to AI, will better understand their intentions and propose personalized recommendations.

In addition to traditional search results such as addresses and opening hours, Google Maps will now also offer a rich set of photos and reviews of places, allowing users to get a more detailed acquaintance with the proposed locations.

Bard AI already speaks Polish. Google expands the Gemini Pro model by 40 new languages
Google is opening up to non-English speaking users of its tools. From February 1, 2024, Gemini Pro - the company's most advanced AI model - is available in the Bard chatbot in most languages of the world, including Polish. But that's not all the news.

AI starts reading minds

These improvements aim not only to help in finding specific places, but also to inspire the discovery of new locations that match the interests or needs of users. Thanks to generative AI, Google Maps will suggest places in a similar style or theme, making it easier to plan trips and explore previously unknown areas.

For example, when a user is away from home and it suddenly starts to rain, they can simply ask Google Maps for "rainy day ideas". The app will then suggest indoor activities such as movie screenings or cabaret shows.

Google Maps takes a step forward

Thanks to large language models (LLM), the app easily analyzes huge databases containing information about over 250 million places and observations from a community of over 300 million active users.

The project is launching in the US in the form of experimental beta access aimed at a selected group of local guides - the most engaged users of Google Maps. Their feedback will be extremely valuable in the process of improving this feature, so that it can be made available to everyone in the future.

Despite the limited initial access, this is a step forward in integrating AI with everyday tools, which could revolutionize the way we use navigation and travel planning apps.
