Summary
Sam Altman has been dismissed from his position as CEO of OpenAI, a decision that surprised both the company's employees and its main investor, Microsoft.
The OpenAI board stated that Altman was not consistently honest in his dealings with them, leading to a loss of confidence in his ability to lead the company.
In response, Altman expressed his gratitude for his time at OpenAI and praised the talented individuals he worked with.
Despite the surprise dismissal, major investors in OpenAI, including Microsoft, were supportive of Altman.
Emmett Shear, former CEO of Twitch, has been appointed as the new CEO of OpenAI. Shear described the opportunity as a "once-in-a-lifetime" but criticized the handling of Altman's dismissal.
Sam Altman will join Microsoft as the head of a team working on the development of artificial intelligence, as announced by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.
Nadella also emphasized Microsoft's continued commitment to cooperating with OpenAI under its new leadership.
The decision to dismiss Sam Altman from the position of CEO of OpenAIsurprised both the company's employees and the representation of its main investor - Microsoft. Until now, the public was not aware that there were conflicts between the OpenAI board and Altman. On the contrary, the success of ChatGPT seemed to indicate that the cooperation was going very well.
Meanwhile, in an official statement, the company's board argues that Altman "was not consistently honest in his dealings with the board, which made it difficult for him to perform his duties", as a result of which "the board has already lost confidence in his ability to continue leading OpenAI".
"OpenAI has been deliberately restructured to continue to fulfill our mission: to ensure that artificial intelligence benefits all of humanity. The board remains fully committed to fulfilling this mission. We are grateful for Sam's contribution to the founding and development of OpenAI. At the same time, we believe that we need a new leader to move forward", we read in the statement on the OpenAI blog.
In response to this decision, Altman wrote on the X platform:
"My time at OpenAI was wonderful. It was a groundbreaking experience for me personally and, I hope, a bit for the world. Above all, I loved working with such talented people", Altman wrote.
OpenAI: Who will replace Sam Altman as CEO?
According to the New York Times and other overseas media, the biggest investors in OpenAI, including Microsoft, were supposed to stand up for Altman, and the decision to dismiss him was a surprise to them. Microsoft's authorities were also pressing for the appointment of a new CEO as soon as possible.
Eventually, as Bloomberg reported on November 20, 2023, the new CEO of OpenAI became Emmett Shear, former CEO of the Twitch platform. In a post on X, Shear called the opportunity to work at OpenAI "a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity", but also emphasized that the parting with his predecessor was "handled very badly" and "breached trust" with the board.
However, Sam Altman will not remain unemployed. A few hours after the news of Shear's employment, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced via the X platform that Altman will join Microsoft as the head of a team working on the development of artificial intelligence. Nadella also emphasized that the company remains committed to cooperating with OpenAI.
"We can't wait to meet the new management team of Emmett Shear and OpenAI and to work with them" - he wrote.
