Revolution in the employment world. Will AI create a four-day work week?
Artificial intelligence can shorten the work week for 28% of workers in the United Kingdom and the United States. The British think tank Autonomy shows that such a transformation will not only increase productivity, but also help avoid unemployment and improve the mental and physical health of workers.
The authors of the report predict that the implementation of artificial intelligence in companies could potentially reduce the working time from 40 to 32 hours per week for 8.8 million workers in the UK and 35 million in the United States. The key assumption is to maintain the current level of productivity and employee wages.
Artificial intelligence shortens working hours
The introduction of tools based on artificial intelligence into the work environment, such as ChatGPT, can not only shorten the time spent on work, but also bring additional social benefits, such as reducing health problems related to work and creating new employment opportunities in the field of modern technologies.
"Too many studies on artificial intelligence, on large language models, etc., focus solely on profitability or apocalypse in many industries. The aim of this study is to try to show that when technology is fully utilized, but its purpose will be different, it can improve the functioning of workplaces, but also restore the balance between professional and private life" - argues Will Stronge, director of research at Autonomy said.
UK and USA ready for changes
In the UK and the United States, Autonomy appeals to the public and private sector, encouraging them to take advantage of the "chance to become global leaders in adopting artificial intelligence in the workplace".
Stronge confirms this with the words:
"What I find really impressive is a decisive industrial strategy regarding artificial intelligence, with automation centers, where trade unions, industry and experts in this field meet to say - we will increase productivity, while providing benefits for workers".
Meanwhile, Congressman Mark Takano, who introduced a bill for a 32-hour work week in the United States Congress, said:
"Fundamental changes are coming to our workforce due to artificial intelligence and automation. Government action will be necessary to ensure that the benefits of efficiency are felt by all workers, regardless of industry or skill level".
