American Space Forces prohibit the use of ChatGPT on work computers
The American Space Force has suspended the use of online generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT, due to data security concerns - according to a note obtained by Reuters.
US Space Force has joined other organizations that have imposed a ban on their employees using certain generative artificial intelligence tools on government computers. This step was taken for data security reasons related to the use of ChatGPT and similar platforms.
The Air Force spokesperson confirmed that the organization has introduced a "strategic pause" in the use of generative AI and large language models. The decision was made to ensure appropriate and strategic implementation of these capabilities within the role and mission of the organization.
Lisa Costa, Chief Technology and Innovation Officer at US Space Force, also emphasized that the temporary ban is not a permanent solution. The military branch has established a task force in cooperation with other Pentagon offices to assess how generative artificial intelligence can be safely used.
US Space Force is not the only organization taking precautions with generative AI. Apple, Samsung, and Verizon are among the companies that have already banned the use of ChatGPT due to data leakage concerns. In addition, many countries, including Russia, China, Iran, Cuba, and Italy, have completely banned the use of this tool.
These steps reflect growing concerns about issues such as encoded biases, hallucinations, and questionable data collection policies related to generative artificial intelligence. However, despite current concerns, the Space Force's position suggests that once these challenges are resolved, generative AI will continue to play a significant role in the organization's strategies.
