Cloud services. Why do companies implement them slower than they could?

As indicated in the "2023 Cloud Security Report" published by Fortinet, over half of the data of nearly 40% of the surveyed companies is already in the public cloud. This percentage will increase to 58% in the next 12-18 months. What threats are associated with this?

Summary

  • Cloud service implementation in enterprises is slowed due to rising costs, compliance requirements, complexity of hybrid and multi-cloud environments, reduced visibility of resources, potential threats, and a lack of experienced specialists.
  • According to the Fortinet study, 95% of companies express concern about data protection in public cloud environments, with 43% believing it poses a greater security risk than local storage.
  • The biggest threats are errors in cloud service configuration (59%), sensitive data leaks (51%), unsecured API interfaces (51%), and unauthorized access to cloud resources (49%).
  • Staff shortages (37%) are the biggest barrier to faster cloud deployment, followed by concerns about data security (29%), compliance with regulations (30%), and integration with current IT infrastructure (27%).
  • Despite challenges, most companies (60%) increase their spending on cloud security by an average of 33%, prioritizing avoiding configuration errors and protecting applications moved to the cloud.
  • 90% of respondents find a centralized navigation dashboard and a single protective platform in the cloud helpful for consistent and accurate data protection.
  • Companies that include cybersecurity in their cloud migration process express satisfaction with the reduced level of risk, increased protection, and cost minimization.
  • The speed of responding to customer needs (52%) is considered the biggest benefit of cloud computing for business, followed by shorter time to market (48%).

Although the process of implementing cloud services in enterprises does not stop, it is currently not progressing as fast as it could. Companies slow down or modify their infrastructure change plans for reasons such as: rising costs of cloud services, compliance requirements, complexity of hybrid and multi-cloud environments, reduced visibility of enterprise resources and potential, upcoming threats, as well as a lack of experienced specialists. All these factors are related to security issues.

The biggest threats associated with cloud services

According to the Fortinet study titled 2023 Cloud Security Report, 95% of companies included in the report express concern about the state of protection of their data in public cloud environments and this is the most common obstacle in the implementation process. 43% of respondents indicated that giving up storing data in a local environment in favor of doing so in the public cloud poses a greater risk to security.

According to 59% of surveyed cybersecurity specialists, the biggest threat remains errors in the configuration of services in cloud environments. The following places are occupied by: leaks of sensitive data (51%), unsecured API interfaces (51%) and unauthorized access to cloud resources by unauthorized third parties (49%).

Other problems that companies struggle with have less to do with technology and more with people and processes. Although compared to the state from the previous year the situation has improved, staff shortages (37%) still constitute the biggest barrier to faster cloud deployment. The survey results are followed by concerns about data security (29%), compliance with legal regulations and regulations (30%) and integration with the current IT infrastructure (27%).

However, the Fortinet report also showed positive changes. Despite economic challenges, most companies (60%) increase their spending on cloud security by an average of 33%. Experts effectively use their budgets to combat the most important threats to companies. Avoiding errors in the configuration of cloud services is a priority (51%). In second place is the protection of applications that have already been moved to the cloud (48%).

Implementation of cloud services and improvement of business results

One of the most important issues is the visibility of the cloud environment. Almost all respondents (90%) find it helpful to have a centralized navigation dashboard and a single protective platform in the cloud, which allows for consistent and accurate data protection. It also solves the problem with the already mentioned aspect of resource visibility and the shortage of specialists.

There is a relationship between the advantages of cloud computing and business results. This year, the speed of responding to customer needs (52%) outpaced - among the biggest benefits for business - shorter time to market (48%). Companies that include cybersecurity in the process of moving their data to the cloud express satisfaction with the reduced level of risk (42%), increased degree of their protection (42%) and cost minimization (41%).
